Suggestions by John and Bonnie Cacavas for Good Eating and Drinking in London
SAL E PEPE
Look out the living room window and there it is. Very popular with Americans. Noisy, close tables, chatty waiters and good if you don’t mind sharing your conversation with the next table.
SIGNOR SASSI
In Knightsbridge Green, a small street off Knightsbridge, this restaurant is walking distance from the flat. Great Italian food, it’s a fun place with wild waiters who might break into song--but the food is serious. Best seafood salad around.
LA PALAIS DU JARDIN
Take the tube to Covent Garden and it’s half a block up on Longacre. A French brassiere type place. Huge and reasonable. Tell the Captain, Willie, you are friends of the Cacavas’ who are friends of the owner’s wife, Carolyn, or forget the whole thing and just enjoy the fun. Large menu and a busy bar.
ST. QUENTIN BRASSERIE
Brompton Road—a few blocks past Harrods. A charming and elegant French restaurant that’s reasonable. Drink the house wines.
PARISIENNE CHOP HOUSE
On Yeoman’s Row, a few blocks past Harrods. An inexpensive brassiere. They have a very nice prix fixe menu—two courses for about twelve pounds.
LES AMIS DU VIN
A great Bistro type restaurant that is French casual. Small outdoor dining area and the specials are reasonable. The Covent Garden tube stop is right near by as is the Opera House. Great place for after-theater.
GRISSINI
The place to go if you want to talk. Located in the Carlton Tower Hotel, the food is delicious and beautifully presented. More expensive. Several blocks walk from the flat. They have a no-smoking area.
THE GUINEA
This is the best place in London for steaks. On Bruton Place in Mayfair. It’s expensive and filled with Americans but has great Dover sole and asparagus.
THE TERRACE IN THE DORCHESTER HOTEL
Very elegant French restaurant. Expensive.
RIVER ROOM IN THE SAVOY HOTEL
Elegant, classical English and French menu. Very expensive.
RIB ROOM IN THE CARLETON TOWER HOTEL
Walking distance from the apartment on Sloane Street. They have the best prime ribs in London, American style. Expensive.
THE GAY HUSSAR
One of the best Hungarian restaurants anywhere. Romantic. Located near Mayfair. Heavier food, of course, but very popular.
TURNER’S
Located on Wilton Street in Belgravia. Superb, classy food. Expensive.
ZEFFERANO
Located on Lowndes Street, a five minute walk. The best and most interesting Italian food in London. The place is very "in" and small so book early.
THE STOCK POT
Turn left out of the flat and it’s located right next to the Basil Street Hotel. Best bargain in London. Great, inexpensive breakfasts.
